FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER, YEAR C
GOD’S WORD FOR US TODAY
Reading 1: Acts 14:21-27 (They put fresh heart into the disciples, encouraging them to persevere)
The Church continues to spread, and Paul and Barnabas encourage these young Christians in their faith as they encounter difficulties in their efforts to remain true to the message of Jesus.
Resp. Ps. (144): The Lord is loving; the Lord is kind.
Reading 2: Rev 21:1-5 (God will wipe away all tears from their eyes)
John has a vision of a new world order, a new creation, where people live in harmony with one another and with God, and where God dwells among them.
Gospel Acc: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.
A new commandment I give unto you that you love one another as I have loved you, that you love one another as I have loved you.
Alleluia . . . . . . .
Gospel : Jn 13:31-35 (I give you a new commandment: love one another)
Jesus speaks these words to his disciples at the Last Supper. He gives them a new commandment – to love one another exactly as he has loved them. Jesus’ love was a love of service: he washed their feet; and it’s a love that goes as far as death. This is a radically new way of loving. Reflect: Imagine Jesus saying these words to you. How do you feel to be given this challenge? In what way does it challenge you?

BAPTISM CLASSES
Baptism classes continue on Wednesday, May 18th in the parish hall.
CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD
We welcome to Children’s Liturgy of the Word all children, especially those in Sacramental Preparation Programmes this year.
THE SICK AND DECEASED
We continue to pray for the sick members of our parish that God will grant them strength and peace; and for those who have died, that God will bring them to the fullness of eternal life.
PRAYER for PEACE BETWEEN RUSSIA and UKRAINE
O Prince of Peace, once more we hear the guns of war and see the faces of frightened children. We pray for the people of Ukraine, that they may be granted peace; for the people of Russia, that they may demand peace; and for our own country, that we may be a positive part of peace-making in this world. O Prince of Peace, lead us from this dark time to a deeper understanding of the global human family, so that all may break bread together in the secure embrace of peace. Amen.
JUSTICE AND PEACE GROUP: COMMUNITY HUB FOR UKRAINIAN REFUGEES
We have just learned that a community hub for Ukrainian refugees has been set up in St Michael’s Parish, Parkhead.
Address: 1350 Gallowgate, G31 4DJ;
Tel: 0141-554-0530;
Email: stmichael.parkhead:rcag.org.uk;
P.Priest: Fr McMahon)
The hub is open on Fridays and Saturdays, from 1:00 pm till 6:00 pm.
Fr McMahon is looking for donations to give to those families who are welcoming refugees into their homes, so as to help them with the practical and immediate needs involved. As a start, the following would be gratefully received:
- Toiletries: toothpaste, toothbrushes, body wash, face cloths, hairbrushes and combs;
- Toilet bags, to help make up small bags of the above;
- Towels (These must be new)
- Bedding: Duvet covers, sheets, pillowcases;
- Nightwear and underwear: Pyjamas, pants;
- Clothes: Joggies, T-shirts, Fleece tops;
Basically – anything practical which might help refugees to feel welcome and to settle into Glasgow.
The Justice and Peace Group will discuss with Fr Francis how we might organise this. So, PLEASE WATCH THIS SPACE.
In the meantime, anyone wishes to take immediate action of their own will be most welcome at the hub.

See: www.marysmeals.org.uk/prayinmay
Following the request by Mary’s Meals for prayer throughout May to support its work, we include the prayer below:
Mary, our Mother, we entrust you to intercede for this work carried out in your name:
- that children throughout the world will see their lives transformed through the promise of a daily meal at school;
- that our volunteers across the globe on whom this work depends will be filled with hope and strength;
- and that new seeds of possibility will be planted, and more people will discover their place in the Mary’s Meals family.
