SOLEMNITY OF PENTECOST, YEAR C
GOD’S WORD FOR US TODAY
Reading 1: Acts 2: 1-11 (The Holy Spirit transforms us, if we open ourselves to his power)
From being a group of men who are afraid of being identified with Jesus after his crucifixion, the apostles are fearless and proud to talk about him in public after receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Resp. Ps. (103): Send forth your Spirit, Lord. Send your Spirit, renew the earth.
Send forth your Spirit, Lord. Renew the face of the earth.
Reading 2: 1 Cor 12: 3-7, 12-13 (In the Spirit we are one body, working for the same Lord)
The Holy Spirit unites us in one body. He also gives us different gifts to ensure that the different needs of God’s people will be met. Let us rejoice in each other’s gifts and use them for others.
Gospel Acc: Alleluia . . . . . Come, |Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful. Kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia . . . .
Gospel : Jn 20: 19-23 (As the Father sent me, so I am sending you. Receive the Holy Spirit)
The disciples must have felt a mixture of shame and joy when Jesus appeared to them after the resurrection, shame for having abandoned him, joy at meeting him again. What does Jesus do? He simply gives them the gift of the Holy Spirit and trusts them out to continue his work. Reflect: How must they have felt? How can you continue the work of Jesus
Offertory : The Offertory Hymn is on the back of this leaflet.

PRAYER for PEACE BETWEEN RUSSIA and UKRAINE
O Prince of Peace, once more we hear the guns of war and see the faces of frightened children. We pray for the people of Ukraine, that they may be granted peace; for the people of Russia, that they may demand peace; and for our own country, that we may be a positive part of peace-making in this world. O Prince of Peace, lead us from this dark time to a deeper understanding of the global human family, so that all may break bread together in the secure embrace of peace. Amen.

SAINT OF THE WEEK: SAINT COLUMBA
Columba was born in Donegal to an Irish noble family, of royal descent, on December 7th 521. He was fostered to a priest for his education, and was baptised by this priest. He studied in monastic schools, was ordained a priest in 551, and came to be known as one of the ‘Twelve Apostles of Ireland.’ He established several monasteries in Ireland, most notably in Derry (545), Durrow (552) and Kells (554).
At the age of 42 he set sail with twelve disciples from Derry and headed towards the Kingdom of Dalriada in Scotland. Through the influence of a cousin, he was given the island of Iona where he and his companions founded a monastery. He spent the rest of his life in missionary activity throughout Scotland, and died in 597. The missions from Iona continued long after Columba’s death, the most famous being St. Aidan’s mission to Lindisfarne (Holy Island), off the Northumbrian coast in the north-east of England.
This is a special feast for the parish of St Columba in Glasgow, and for the dioceses of Argyll and the Isles and Dunkeld. Let’s remember them in our prayers as we thank God for the faith that Columba brought to Scotland.

OFFERTORY HYMN
Spirit of God, come dwell within me,
open my heart, O come set me free
Fill me with love for Jesus, my Lord,
O fill me with living water.
Chorus: Jesus is living, Jesus is here.
Jesus, my Lord, come closer to me.
Jesus, our Saviour, dying for me,
and rising to save his people.
Lord, how I thirst; O Lord, I am weak,
Lord, come to me; you alone do I seek.
Lord, you are life and love and hope,
O fill me with living water. Chorus
Lord, I am blind; O Lord, I can’t see.
Stretch out your hand, O Lord, comfort me.
Lead me your way in light and in truth,
O fill me with living water. Chorus
